Dulles Executive Plaza I
Herndon, VA
LD7 Studio was awarded this project to re-envision the shared courtyard located between the two office buildings. With tight budget constraints established by the client, LD7 Studio successfully exceeded the clients’ expectations. The design successfully repurposed the existing pavers in a creative way to redefine active vs. passive spaces while avoiding costs associated with new pavers. LD7 Studio replaced tall, overgrown plant materials around the courtyard and pond with dwarf shrubs and perennials so that views to the pond with its water-feature were taken advantage of in the design. The new building interior included a new café and fitness center, so LD7 Studio designed the courtyard as an extension of the building by creating an outdoor café seating and gaming area adjacent to the building. Understanding the clients’ tight budget constraints, new planting areas were introduced that helped create smaller, more intimate seating areas throughout the courtyard while defining pedestrian paths between areas. A fire pit overlooking the newly landscaped pond was added on-axis with the main building egress to the courtyard.
