The Bend

Washington, DC

LD7 Studio was selected as the landscape architect for the new construction project located along Michigan Avenue near Catholic University and only half a mile from the Brookland Metro Station. Consisting of numerous bio-retention areas at the street level, LD7 Studio worked closely with the civil engineer to capture all storm water on-site and to embellish the SWM areas with appropriate bio-retention plant material, taking plant color and flowering season into account for interest. LD7 Studio designed a street-level restaurant terrace with easy pedestrian movement between it and the envisioned pedestrian gathering area at the street intersection. A penthouse lounge designed by the architect was re-imagined to focus the exterior terrace on the vistas of downtown Washington, DC and its monuments, while creating both passive and active gathering spaces using fire pits, TV walls, overhead string lighting, and various seating options. The penthouse level also has food cultivation planters which were envisioned for use by the hotel restaurant. The 2nd floor green roof was designed to provide visual interest from the guest rooms by using alternating colors of sedum and perennials, while allowing easy access to the solar panel field designed to lessen the burden of the building on the power grid. This project is currently under design.
